Do UVC-Lights Work in Getting Rid of Viruses?

With COVID-19 still rampant throughout a lot of countries, many individuals are looking for effective ways to get rid of the virus that clings to objects and surfaces. 

One of the effective ways you can kill the virus and other germs is by using UV (ultraviolet) light. UV light is a type of radiation that has more energy and has a lot of benefits, like rapidly killing germs without the use of harsh chemicals.

With that being said, we’ll talk about how UV lights can help kill the virus and other germs, especially COVID-19. But before that, let’s discuss the different types of UV light.

What are the Different Types of UV Light?

There are three types of UV lights you must know about. These include the:

UVA Light and UVB Light

UVA light has the lowest amount of energy and is associated with the sun’s UV rays. This type of light is linked to skin aging and skin damage. Meanwhile, UVB light is in the middle of the spectrum. It is closely associated with most skin cancers and contributes to sunburn. Individuals are exposed to UVA and UVB from natural sunlight.

UVC Light

Lastly, UVC light has the largest amount of energy. Unlike UVA and UVB, which affect people, UVC is typically absorbed by the Earth’s ozone layer. 

UVC light is reproduced in man-made germicidal UVC lamps, which have been shown to kill a wide range of viruses and bacteria, including coronaviruses. Current research indicates that UVC lamps are also effective in killing the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

Can UVC Light Kill the COVID-19 Virus?

UVC light has long been used to disinfect the air, water, and solid surfaces. UVC light has been used successfully for years to prevent the spread of microorganisms such as TB. As a result, UVC lamps are frequently referred to as “germicidal” lamps.

UVC radiation may also be beneficial in suppressing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the COVID-19 virus.

How Is The COVID-19 Virus Killed By UCV-Light?

When inactivating the COVID-19 virus, it’s hard to do without the use of harsh chemicals. However, recent studies indicate that UVC light can efficiently and safely inactivate the airborne human coronavirus. With this study, it becomes easier for businesses to safely disinfect their locations without having to use extreme and harsh chemicals that could put their employees to risk.

To use UCV light to inactivate the virus, it would need direct contact. Without direct contact, the virus may not be successfully inactivated. Stronger UVC lamps are only available for professionals to be used in healthcare settings to disinfect equipment and operating rooms. However, there are less stronger UVC lamps available on the market. Since they have a lower dose, the exposure would need to take a bit of time to work and to provide effective inactivation of the bacteria or virus. 

Final Thoughts

UVC light is the most effective type of radiation that kills viruses, bacteria, and germs. With that being said, you must take note that although there are studies of how UCV lamps are able to inactivate viruses and bacteria, the length of exposure in order to kill the virus is yet to be determined. Nonetheless, it is a stepping stone in improving our fight to kill off the COVID-19 virus.
